National Wellness Month is a good reminder that looking after yourself should not only happen when you are already struggling.

Many people think about booking a massage when they are already tense, sore, stressed or completely worn out. However, self-care is often more helpful when it becomes part of your routine, rather than something you only turn to at crisis point.

A good wellbeing routine does not need to be complicated. It can include rest, movement, hydration, sleep, time away from work, fresh air and regular massage appointments. The key is consistency. Small, regular habits can help you check in with your body before tension builds up too much.

At Essential Thyme in Jesmond, massage is not treated as a one-size-fits-all appointment. Every person is different, so every massage session is shaped around the person on the day.

Why National Wellness Month Matters

National Wellness Month encourages people to think about their physical and mental wellbeing in a more consistent way.

For some, wellness might mean getting more sleep. For others, it might mean moving more, setting better boundaries, eating well, spending time outdoors or making space for regular self-care.

The NHS also highlights the importance of making time for relaxation, exercise and socialising as part of managing stress and supporting wellbeing.

Massage can be part of that wider wellbeing routine. It is not just something to book as a one-off treat. For many people, a regular massage appointment gives them dedicated time to pause, notice how their body is feeling and focus on areas of tension, knots or general aches and pains.

This does not mean waiting until your body is already shouting at you. It means paying attention earlier.

Massage as Part of a Wellbeing Routine

A wellbeing routine should support your body regularly, not only when things feel uncomfortable.

Regular massage may help support relaxation, ease areas of muscular tension and give you time to check in with your body. If you often hold tension in your neck, shoulders, back or legs, a massage appointment can be adapted around how you are feeling on the day.

At Essential Thyme, you do not need to choose a specific massage type before booking. Instead, you choose the length of your appointment, such as 30, 45 or 60 minutes.

Before your massage begins, you will talk through:

Your medical history

How you are feeling that day

Any areas of tension, knots or general aches and pains

How any medical conditions are affecting you

What your body may need from the session

What your end goals are, including any events you may be training for

This consultation helps shape the massage appointment around you. Depending on your needs, the session may include different massage techniques to work with the areas that need support.

Why You Should Not Wait Until Crisis Point

A lot of people carry on until they cannot ignore their body anymore.

The tight shoulders become normal. The aching back gets pushed aside. The tiredness is explained away as being busy. Before long, the body is tense, uncomfortable and struggling to properly switch off.

National Wellness Month is a useful time to step back and ask whether your current self-care routine is actually supporting you.

Many people only think about booking a massage when they already feel sore or uncomfortable. However, regular massage could help prevent the muscles tightening up or possibly help prevent damage from overuse. Prevention is better than the cure.

Massage should not be seen as a last resort. It can be one part of how you look after your body consistently.

Self-Care Should Be Practical

Self-care is sometimes made to sound like something luxurious or unrealistic, but it should be practical.

Good self-care should include:

Taking rest days

Stretching gently

Drinking enough water

Eating well

Listening to your body

Booking regular massage sessions

Giving your body time to recover

The NHS recommends adults aim to be physically active every day, including a mix of moderate activity and strengthening activities across the week. Movement is only one part of self-care, but it shows how regular habits can support wider health and wellbeing.

This is especially important if you have a busy job, exercise regularly, spend long hours at a desk, care for others, or have routines that place repeated strain on the body.

Your wellbeing routine does not need to be perfect. It just needs to be something you can keep coming back to.

Regular Massage and Everyday Life

Massage can fit into everyday life in different ways.

Some people book around training plans, events or busy work periods. Others choose to have a massage every 4 to 6 weeks as part of their regular wellbeing routine.

At Essential Thyme, massage memberships are available for people who want to make massage a more consistent part of their month. Memberships are based on appointment time rather than massage type, helping to keep the pricing simple and fair.

Bronze membership includes one 30-minute massage session per month. Silver includes one 45-minute massage session per month. Gold includes one 60-minute massage session per month.

This can be a helpful option if you want to stop treating massage as an occasional extra and start building it into your routine properly.

Make Wellness Part of Your Month

National Wellness Month is not about changing everything at once. It is about noticing where you might need more support and making small changes that feel realistic.

If your body often feels tense, tired or uncomfortable, regular massage could be one way to support your wellbeing routine. It gives you time to pause, check in and have a massage appointment shaped around how your body is feeling on the day.

At Essential Thyme, every massage session is tailored to the individual. You book the time, Sandra carries out a consultation, and the massage is adapted around your needs.

This National Wellness Month, try not to wait until you are already struggling.

Start building self-care into your routine now.

When you think about exercise, your mind might go straight to training plans, gym sessions, running routes, fitness classes or weekend walks. However, self-care when exercising is just as important as the activity itself.

Looking after your body before, during and after exercise can help you build a routine that feels more balanced, sustainable and supportive. This does not mean you need to do anything complicated. In fact, small habits such as warming up, stretching, resting, staying hydrated and booking regular massage sessions can all play a part.

At Essential Thyme, massage appointments are tailored to each person on the day. So, whether you are training for an event, getting back into movement or simply trying to stay active, massage may help support your body as part of a wider self-care routine.

Why Self-Care When Exercising Matters

Exercise puts demand on the body. This can be a positive thing, as it helps build strength, stamina and confidence over time. However, it can also leave muscles feeling tight, tired or overworked, especially if you are increasing your activity levels.

That is why self-care when exercising should not be an afterthought. It is part of looking after your body properly.

Good self-care should include:

Taking rest days

Stretching gently

Drinking enough water

Eating well

Listening to your body

Booking regular massage sessions

Giving your body time to recover

If you ignore aches, tension or fatigue for too long, exercise can start to feel harder than it needs to. By building self-care into your routine, you give your body more support between sessions.

Where Massage Can Fit Into Your Exercise Routine

Massage can be a helpful part of self-care when exercising, especially when it is planned into your routine rather than left until the last minute.

Many people only think about booking a massage when they already feel sore or uncomfortable. However, regular massage could help prevent the muscles tightening up or possibly help prevent damage from overuse. Prevention is better than the cure.

At Essential Thyme, you do not need to choose a specific massage therapy before booking. Instead, you book the length of appointment you would like, and Sandra will tailor the session around your needs on the day.

Before your massage begins, you will talk through things such as:

Your medical history

How you are feeling that day

Any areas of tension, knots or general aches and pains

How any medical conditions are affecting you

What your body may need from the session

What your end goals are, including any events you may be training for

After this consultation, your massage appointment may include a blend of different massage therapies to help support your body in a way that feels right for you.

Do Not Leave Massage Until the Last Minute

If you are training for an event, such as a run, walk, challenge or sporting activity, it is important to plan ahead.

Massage should not be something you suddenly add in just a few days before a big event if your body is not used to it. This is because massage can relax the muscles, and if your body has trained in a certain way, changing how the muscles feel too close to the event may not be helpful.

For example, if someone has trained for weeks without massage and then books a deep massage shortly before the event, their muscles may feel different during training or on the day itself. This could increase the risk of pushing too hard or not moving in the way their body has become used to.

Instead, massage is best considered as part of your wider routine from the start. This gives your body time to respond and allows sessions to be adapted as your training changes.

Self-Care When Exercising Is Not Just for Athletes

You do not need to be training for a marathon to think about self-care when exercising.

Everyday movement can affect the body too. This could include:

Going to the gym

Running or jogging

Swimming

Cycling

Fitness classes

Yoga or Pilates

Long walks

Gardening or allotment work

Playing sport at the weekend

Even regular day-to-day activity can lead to areas of tension, especially in the back, shoulders, neck, hips or legs.

Massage may support your routine by giving you time to pause, check in with your body and focus on areas that feel tight or overworked.

Listen to Your Body

One of the most important parts of self-care when exercising is learning to listen to your body.

It can be tempting to push through discomfort, especially if you have a fitness goal in mind. However, tiredness, tension and aches can be your body’s way of asking for a little more care.

This does not always mean stopping completely. It might mean taking a rest day, reducing intensity, stretching more gently or booking a massage appointment to support your recovery routine.

If you are unsure whether massage is suitable for you, especially if you have a medical condition, injury or are taking medication, it is always best to speak to a qualified professional before booking.

Build Self-Care Into Your Routine

The best routines are often the ones that feel realistic. You do not need to overhaul everything at once.

Start by asking yourself:

Am I giving my body enough rest?

Do I stretch before and after exercise?

Am I drinking enough water?

Am I noticing the same areas of tension again and again?

Would regular massage help me look after my body more consistently?

At Essential Thyme, some clients choose to book massage appointments every 4 to 6 weeks as part of their wellbeing routine. Others book around training plans, busy work periods or times when they know their body needs extra support.

There is no one-size-fits-all approach. Your massage session is tailored to you, your body and how you feel on the day.

Book a Massage Appointment in Jesmond

Self-care when exercising is about supporting your body, not waiting until you feel completely worn out.

Whether you are training for an event, returning to exercise or simply trying to move more often, massage can be a helpful part of a wider self-care routine when it is planned properly.

At Essential Thyme in Jesmond, every massage appointment is bespoke to the client. You simply choose the length of your session, and Sandra will adapt the appointment around your needs on the day.

Professional wellness is no longer a nice-to-have. It has become an important part of creating healthier, happier and more productive workplaces.

People spend a large part of their lives at work. Therefore, supporting wellbeing in the workplace can have a positive impact on both employees and businesses. When people feel valued, supported and energised, they often communicate better, work more effectively and enjoy greater job satisfaction.

What Is Professional Wellness?

Professional wellness refers to a person’s overall wellbeing within their working life. It includes physical health, emotional wellbeing, personal development, work-life balance and feeling supported within a professional environment.

Professional wellness is not simply about reducing stress. It is about creating opportunities for people to feel engaged, motivated and capable of performing at their best.

For employers, investing in professional wellness can help improve morale, strengthen workplace culture and support employee retention. For employees, it can provide valuable opportunities to recharge, learn new skills and prioritise self-care.

Workplace Massage and Professional Wellness

One of the most popular ways organisations support professional wellness is through workplace massage.

Many employees spend hours sitting at desks, working on screens or carrying out repetitive tasks. Over time, this can lead to muscle tension, stiffness and discomfort.

Essential Thyme offers workplace massage sessions that can be delivered in the office without disrupting the working day. These are usually short, seated massage sessions designed to help employees pause, ease tension and return to work feeling refreshed.

Many businesses find that workplace massage contributes to a more positive working environment. Employees often return to their roles feeling refreshed, energised and ready to focus on the tasks ahead.

Our workplace massage services can be tailored to suit different organisations, making professional wellness accessible for businesses of all sizes.

Complementary Therapies That Support Wellbeing

Professional wellness extends beyond the workplace itself. Looking after wellbeing outside of working hours can also have a positive effect on confidence, focus and overall quality of life.

At Essential Thyme, we offer a range of complementary therapies designed to support relaxation and wellbeing. The following are some of the therapies available at Essential Thyme:

Clinical Aromatherapy

Swedish massage

Indian head massage

Pregnancy massage

Cupping massage

Myofascial release

Trigger point release

Sports or deep tissue massage

Oncology massage

Each therapy provides an opportunity for people to step away from daily pressures and focus on themselves for a while.

Many clients choose regular sessions as part of their ongoing wellbeing routine. By making time for self-care, people often feel better equipped to manage the demands of work and everyday life.

Aromatherapy plays an important role in many of our professional wellness services.

Essential oils have been used for generations to support relaxation, focus and emotional wellbeing. Each essential oil has their own therapeutic properties that when used correctly can help support a person’s wellbeing. The use of Essential Oils is not an alternative to main stream medication, but they could help to work alongside but should be used with caution, always seek advice from a fully qualified Clinical Aromatherapist.

For example:

Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis) is known to help improve memory and concentration.

Bergamot (Citrus bergamia) is known to help reduce stress and anxiety.

Grapefruit (Citrus x paradisi) is known to help ease stress, reduce mental fatigue and increase alertness.

Cedarwood (Cedrus atlantica) is known for calming the mind and to promote inner strength.

Our Essential Oils Workshops introduce participants to the safe and effective use of essential oils while exploring how essential oils can become part of a wider wellbeing routine.

For businesses looking to promote professional wellness, Essential oil workshops can provide an engaging and educational experience for teams.

Building Stronger Teams with Brickworks LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY®

Professional wellness also includes healthy communication, collaboration and team relationships.

That is why Essential Thyme offers Brickworks LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® sessions.

These facilitated workshops help teams explore ideas, solve challenges and improve communication using a creative and structured approach through the power of Lego® Bricks.

Brickworks can support:

Team development

Leadership workshops

Business planning

Problem-solving sessions

Organisational change initiatives

Fun team building time out

By encouraging participation from everyone in the room, these sessions help create an environment where all voices are heard.

Strong communication and shared understanding are key ingredients in workplace wellbeing. As a result, Brickworks can become a valuable part of a professional wellness strategy.

Professional Wellness Memberships

Consistency is often one of the biggest challenges when it comes to wellbeing.

People frequently intend to prioritise self-care but struggle to make time for it within busy schedules.

Essential Thyme’s massage memberships make it easier to build wellbeing into everyday life.

Membership options provide regular access to therapies, helping clients maintain a proactive approach to self-care throughout the year.

Rather than waiting until stress or tension becomes overwhelming, memberships encourage people to invest in their wellbeing on an ongoing basis.

In some cases, membership costs may be partially or fully recoverable through an employer’s healthcare cash plan. As many workplace healthcare schemes include complementary therapies and wellbeing services, it is worth checking with your provider to see what support may be available.

This regular commitment can become an important part of supporting long-term professional wellness.

Why Professional Wellness Matters

Businesses that invest in professional wellness often recognise that people are their greatest asset.

Supporting employee wellbeing can contribute to:

Reduced staff sickness

Improved workplace morale

Better employee engagement

Stronger team relationships

Increased job satisfaction

A more positive workplace culture

At the same time, individuals who prioritise their own wellbeing often feel more capable of managing professional and personal responsibilities.

Professional wellness is not about perfection. Instead, it is about creating sustainable habits and supportive environments that help people thrive.

Sleep is one of the most important foundations of good health. Yet, for many people, it is often overlooked or sacrificed in favour of busy schedules, work demands or daily responsibilities.

This month, we are focusing on the importance of good sleep and why it plays such a vital role in both physical and mental wellbeing. Understanding how sleep affects the body may help you make small, meaningful changes that support better rest and overall health.

Why Sleep Matters

Sleep is not simply a time when the body switches off. It is an active process where important functions take place. During sleep, the body works to repair tissues, regulate hormones and support brain function.

Good quality sleep may help to:

Support the immune system

Improve concentration and memory

Regulate mood

Allow the body to recover physically

Maintain overall balance within the body

When sleep is consistent and restorative, it may support how you feel and function each day. However, when sleep is poor or disrupted, the effects can be felt across many areas of health.

The Impact of Poor Sleep on the Body

Lack of sleep can affect the body in several ways. Even short periods of poor sleep may lead to noticeable changes in energy levels and physical wellbeing.

Increased Fatigue and Low Energy

One of the most immediate effects of poor sleep is fatigue. Without enough rest, the body may struggle to maintain energy levels throughout the day. This can make even simple tasks feel more demanding.

Reduced Physical Recovery

Sleep plays a key role in physical recovery. Muscles repair and rebuild during rest, particularly after exercise or physical activity. Without adequate sleep, this process may be less effective, which could lead to prolonged soreness or reduced performance.

Weakened Immune Function

Consistent poor sleep may weaken the immune system, making it harder for the body to fight off illness. This could result in more frequent colds or a longer recovery time when unwell.

Hormonal Imbalance

Sleep helps regulate hormones that control appetite, stress and energy levels. Disrupted sleep patterns may affect these hormones, which could lead to changes in appetite, increased stress levels or difficulty maintaining a balanced routine.

The Impact of Poor Sleep on the Mind

Sleep is equally important for mental wellbeing. The brain uses sleep to process information, regulate emotions and reset for the following day.

Difficulty Concentrating

Poor sleep may make it harder to focus, process information and make decisions. This can affect productivity at work and everyday tasks.

Mood Changes

Sleep and mood are closely linked. A lack of sleep may contribute to irritability, low mood or increased feelings of stress and anxiety.

Increased Stress Levels

When the body is tired, it may find it harder to cope with stress. This can create a cycle where stress affects sleep, and poor sleep increases stress.

Reduced Emotional Resilience

Good sleep may help you feel more balanced and better able to manage challenges. Without it, small issues may feel more overwhelming.

Creating Better Sleep Habits

Improving sleep does not always require major changes. Small, consistent habits may support better rest over time.

Create a Wind-Down Routine

Giving yourself time to relax before bed may help signal to your body that it is time to sleep. This could include reading, gentle stretching or taking a warm shower.

Limit Screen Time

Reducing exposure to screens in the evening may support better sleep. The light from phones and devices can make it harder for the body to recognise when it is time to rest.

Keep a Consistent Sleep Schedule

Going to bed and waking up at similar times each day may help regulate your body’s natural rhythm. Consistency can make it easier to fall asleep and wake feeling refreshed.

Create a Calm Sleep Environment

A quiet, cool and comfortable space may support deeper sleep. Reducing noise and light can help create a more restful environment.

Support Relaxation Through the Body

Physical tension can make it harder to relax at night. Gentle movement, breathing exercises or massage therapy may help release tension and prepare the body for rest.

How Massage Therapy Could Support Better Sleep

Massage therapy may play a supportive role in improving sleep. By encouraging relaxation and reducing physical tension, it could help create the conditions needed for rest.

Massage may help to:

Calm the nervous system

Reduce muscle tightness

Promote relaxation

Encourage a sense of calm

For those who find it difficult to switch off, regular massage may support the transition from a busy day to a more restful evening.

At Essential Thyme, therapies are designed to provide a calm and supportive environment where both body and mind can begin to unwind.

The Role of Aromatherapy in Sleep

Aromatherapy may also support relaxation when used correctly. Essential oils such as lavender, chamomile and frankincense are often associated with calming properties.

When used under the guidance of a qualified aromatherapist, essential oils may help create a soothing environment that supports better sleep.

It is important to remember that essential oils are highly concentrated and should be used safely and appropriately.

A Holistic Approach to Better Sleep

Sleep is influenced by many factors, including lifestyle, stress levels and daily habits. Taking a holistic approach means considering all aspects of wellbeing rather than focusing on one area alone.

This may include:

Managing stress

Creating consistent routines

Supporting physical relaxation

Making time for rest

Small changes, when applied consistently, may lead to noticeable improvements in sleep quality.

Take the Next Step Towards Better Sleep

Understanding the importance of sleep is the first step. Putting supportive habits into practice is where real change may begin.

If you would like to explore this in more depth, our dedicated course provides guidance, practical strategies and support to help improve your sleep in a structured and accessible way.

👉 You can find out more here:
https://essential-thyme.co.uk/how-to-improve-your-sleep/

Good sleep is not a luxury, it is a fundamental part of overall health. It supports the body, the mind and how you experience each day.

While poor sleep may affect many areas of wellbeing, small, consistent changes could help improve the quality of your rest over time.

By creating space for relaxation, supporting your body and building healthy routines, better sleep may become more achievable.

And sometimes, it begins with something as simple as taking the time to pause, unwind and listen to what your body needs.

Each year, World Health Day offers an opportunity to reflect on what health really means. While it is often associated with medical care and the treatment of illness, health is far broader than this. It includes how we feel physically, mentally and emotionally daily.

At Essential Thyme, health is viewed through a more holistic lens. This means recognising that wellbeing is not only about addressing symptoms, but also about supporting the body and mind in a balanced and consistent way. Massage therapy, alongside aromatherapy and essential oils, could form part of this supportive approach.

What Does Holistic Health Mean?

Holistic health focuses on the whole person. It considers physical wellbeing, emotional balance and lifestyle habits, rather than looking at one issue in isolation.

Modern life often places demand on the body. Long hours sitting at a desk, physical strain from exercise, and the pressures of daily routines may all contribute to tension, fatigue and stress. Over time, these can begin to affect how we feel and function.

This is where complementary therapies, such as massage, could support overall wellbeing.

Massage Therapy as a Complementary Approach

Massage therapy is widely recognised as a complementary therapy. This means it is not intended to replace medical treatment, but rather to work alongside it in a supportive way.

Regular massage may help to:

Reduce muscular tension

Encourage circulation

Support relaxation

Promote a sense of calm

Help the body feel more balanced

By addressing areas of tightness and strain, massage therapy could help the body to function more comfortably. It may also create space for rest, which is often overlooked in busy lifestyles.

At Essential Thyme, therapies are designed to support both the physical and mental aspects of wellbeing. Each session provides an opportunity to slow down and reconnect with the body.

The Role of Massage in Everyday Health

Many people associate massage therapy with relaxation or as a response to pain. However, it could also be considered as part of a regular wellbeing routine.

When used consistently, massage may help to maintain muscle health and identify areas of tension before they develop into more significant issues. This proactive approach may support long-term wellbeing.

For individuals with active lifestyles, including those training for events such as marathons or fitness competitions, massage could help support recovery. For others, it may simply offer a moment of calm within a busy week.

World Health Day is a reminder that small, consistent actions often contribute to overall health. Incorporating regular massage could be one of those actions.

Aromatherapy and Essential Oils

Aromatherapy is another complementary therapy that may support wellbeing when used appropriately. It involves the use of essential oils, which are concentrated plant extracts obtained from flowers, leaves, bark and other natural sources.

Essential oils are highly potent and should be used with care. Under the guidance of a qualified aromatherapist, they may be selected and blended to suit individual needs.

Aromatherapy could be used alongside massage to enhance the overall experience. Depending on the oils chosen, it may support relaxation, help create a calming environment, or contribute to emotional balance.

For example, certain essential oils are often associated with relaxation, while others may be used to support focus or uplift mood. The key is ensuring they are used safely and appropriately.

At Essential Thyme, aromatherapy is approached with knowledge and care, ensuring that any use of essential oils is guided by professional understanding.

The Importance of Qualified Guidance

While complementary therapies may offer support, it is important that they are used responsibly. Essential oils require careful handling due to their concentration.

Working with a qualified therapist or aromatherapist ensures that therapies are tailored to the individual. It also helps to ensure that techniques and products are used safely.

Massage therapy and aromatherapy are not one-size-fits-all approaches. Each person’s body and circumstances are different. Professional guidance allows therapies to be adapted accordingly.

Creating Space for Wellbeing

One of the most valuable aspects of massage therapy may be the opportunity it provides to pause. In a fast-paced environment, it is easy to overlook the importance of rest.

Taking time out for an Essential Thyme Therapy could help shift the focus back to self-care. This pause may support both mental clarity and physical relaxation.

At Essential Thyme, the environment is designed to feel calm and welcoming. The aim is to create a space where individuals can step away from daily pressures and focus on their wellbeing.

A Balanced Approach to Health

World Health Day encourages a broader view of health. It highlights the importance of prevention, balance and ongoing care.

Massage therapy, aromatherapy and other complementary approaches may contribute to this balance. They could support the body in managing tension, encourage relaxation and provide a sense of overall wellbeing.

However, it is important to remember that complementary therapies work best as part of a wider approach. This may include regular movement, balanced nutrition, adequate rest and appropriate medical care when needed.

Supporting Your Wellbeing with Essential Thyme

At Essential Thyme, the focus is on providing therapies and training that support holistic wellbeing. Whether through massage therapy or aromatherapy, the aim is to create a supportive and professional environment.

World Health Day is a gentle reminder to check in with yourself. It is an opportunity to consider what your body and mind may need, and how you could support your wellbeing moving forward.

Massage therapy may not solve everything, but it could play a valuable role in helping you feel more balanced, more relaxed and more connected to your body.

If you would like to explore how massage therapy or complementary therapies could support your wellbeing, you can find more information here:
https://essential-thyme.co.uk

However, one area that is often overlooked is recovery. Regular massage therapy can play an important role in helping runners maintain performance, prevent injury and support the body during periods of intense training. Running places repetitive strain on muscles, joints and connective tissues. Over time, this can lead to tightness, imbalance and small areas of tension that, if ignored, may develop into more serious injuries. Integrating massage therapy into your routine is a proactive way to support your body as your training demands increase. Why Recovery Matters During Marathon Training Training for events like the London Marathon or the Great North Run requires a gradual increase in weekly mileage.

Why Recovery Matters During Marathon Training

Training for events like the London Marathon or the Great North Run requires a gradual increase in weekly mileage. Long runs, speed sessions and strength training can place significant stress on the body. While pushing yourself is part of the process, recovery is just as important as the training itself.

Without proper recovery, the body may struggle to repair and rebuild muscle tissue efficiently. This can lead to fatigue, reduced performance and a higher risk of common running injuries such as:

Tight hamstrings

Iliotibial (IT) band irritation

Calf strains

Plantar fasciitis

Lower back tension

Massage therapy helps support the body’s natural recovery processes by encouraging circulation, reducing muscular tension and promoting relaxation within the nervous system.

How Massage Therapy Supports Runners

Massage therapy offers several benefits for runners who are training regularly. These include both physical and mental advantages.

Improved Circulation

Massage encourages blood flow to working muscles. Increased circulation delivers oxygen and nutrients needed for recovery while helping remove metabolic waste products that accumulate during exercise.

Reduced Muscle Tightness

Running relies heavily on key muscle groups including the calves, quadriceps, hamstrings and glutes. Repetitive movement can cause these muscles to tighten over time. Massage helps release built-up tension, allowing muscles to function more efficiently.

Injury Prevention

Many injuries develop gradually due to overuse or imbalance. Regular massage can help identify areas of tightness or restriction before they become problematic. Addressing these issues early allows runners to maintain consistent training without setbacks.

Improved Flexibility and Mobility

When muscles are relaxed and healthy, joints can move more freely. This can improve running form and reduce strain placed on surrounding structures.

Mental Recovery

Training for endurance events can be physically demanding but also mentally exhausting. Taking time for massage provides an opportunity to slow down, reset and reconnect with your body.

Massage Before and After Events

Massage can also play a role in both preparation and recovery around race events.

In the weeks leading up to races such as the Great North 10K, Great North Run or London Marathon, regular massage can help keep muscles balanced and reduce tightness as training intensity peaks.

After a race, massage therapy can assist the body in recovering from the stress of the event. Gentle techniques help reduce stiffness and encourage circulation, allowing muscles to recover more effectively.

Making Massage Part of Your Training Routine

Many runners view massage as something they book only when pain appears. However, the greatest benefits come from consistent preventative care.

Regular sessions allow your therapist to understand how your body responds to training. Patterns of tightness or imbalance can be identified and addressed before they affect performance.

For runners following structured training plans, scheduling massage alongside long runs or recovery weeks can be a useful way to maintain physical balance throughout the season.

Massage Memberships for Consistent Recovery

One of the easiest ways to prioritise regular recovery is through a massage membership.

Massage memberships are designed to make consistent self-care more accessible. Rather than booking sporadically, memberships allow runners to incorporate regular therapies into their routine. This supports ongoing muscle maintenance and encourages a proactive approach to recovery.

For those preparing for major events such as the Great North Run or London Marathon, having a structured recovery plan can be just as valuable as the training programme itself.

Memberships also help ensure that recovery is not forgotten when life becomes busy. When sessions are scheduled regularly, your body benefits from ongoing care rather than occasional therapy.

Listening to Your Body

Every runner’s body responds differently to training. Some runners may experience tight calves after long runs, while others notice tension in their hips or lower back. Paying attention to these signals is important.

Massage therapy provides an opportunity to tune in to your body and address areas that need attention. By supporting the body consistently, runners can maintain training momentum while reducing the likelihood of injury.

Supporting Your Running Journey

Running events such as the Great North 10K, Great North Run, and London Marathon are incredible achievements that require dedication, discipline and resilience. Looking after your body throughout the journey helps ensure you can enjoy both the training and the race itself.

Recovery is not a luxury; it is a vital part of performance. Regular massage therapy can support muscle health, enhance recovery and help runners stay strong throughout their training cycle.

If you are preparing for an upcoming race or increasing your training mileage, making massage part of your routine could be one of the most valuable steps you take for your wellbeing and performance.

It asks us to consider the unthinkable. Loss, grief, and decisions made in moments no family should ever face. And yet, choosing to register as an organ donor and speaking openly with loved ones about your wishes could save multiple lives.

One donor can save up to eight lives through organ donation and improve many more through tissue donation. Behind that statistic are real families waiting, hoping, praying for a call that could change everything.

Organ donation is not just about signing up to a register. It is about clarity. It is about ensuring that if the unimaginable happens, your loved ones are not left guessing what you would have wanted.

Because in the most difficult moments, certainty matters.

The Conversation That Could Mean Everything

Registering on the Organ Donor Register is a simple step. But equally important is having the conversation.

In times of shock and grief, families are asked whether their loved one would have wanted to donate. Knowing the answer can ease an already overwhelming burden.

For some families, that conversation could mean the difference between life and death for another child.

Child Organ Donation: The Unthinkable Decision

No parent ever wants to think about child organ donation. It feels like an unspeakable situation, one that no family imagines themselves in.

And yet, there are babies and children across the country waiting for life-saving transplants. For some, a donated organ is the only hope of survival.

Among those who understand this reality more than most are Chris and Sarah Cookson, the founders of The Charlie and Carter Foundation.

Their second son, Carter Cookson, was born on Boxing Day 2018.

His mammy, Sarah, shares their story:

“I would like to tell you about our baby boy called Carter Cookson.

Our brave little boy was born on Boxing Day 2018, seeing his beautiful face filled our hearts with so much hope, after losing his big brother at such a tender age of 2 years old.

The face of an angel and the image of his big brother with blonde curly hair, we thought, we hoped this was our chance to be a family again… to our heartache we were again living in what only could be described as hell, our second baby boy was again fighting for his life.

Within hours of being born, Carter became seriously ill… Our precious baby boy had a poorly heart… we were given the devastating blow that the only way Carter would survive was if he received a gift of life, a heart transplant.

I remember the suffocating feeling, the desperation of wanting our baby to live… but then, the crushing feeling of, if our baby boy is to live another baby would have to gain their angel wings.

I remember every day of the 25 days he fought to stay with us… asking families, parents to have that conversation, could you donate an organ? could you donate your child’s organs?

To our absolute devastation and heartache our brave little boy did not receive his gift of life, and we again had to say our goodbyes…

Both of our angels were too poorly to donate… we would have loved for them to live on in other babies and save lives.

All we ask is for the person reading this letter… think about it, what would you do? You could save the lives of many… live on through others.

Thank you for reading… cherish your children and loved ones, life is so very precious.

Charlie & Carter’s Mammy xXxX”

Carter was just 25 days old when he passed away.

Cruelly taken from his parents, just five years after they lost their first beautiful boy.

Turning Grief into Purpose

From unimaginable loss, Chris and Sarah turned what was The Charlie Cookson Foundation into what is now known as The Charlie and Carter Foundation..

The foundation provides financial support to families caring for seriously ill children with life-limiting conditions. It helps ease the pressure of mortgages, rent, bills and daily living costs, allowing parents to focus on what matters most, time with their child.

Every morning, they wake up and fight for other families because they know how precious that time is.

Their strength, courage and compassion continue to inspire everyone who supports their work.

They rely on the kindness and support of others to help them to look after families who find themselves in impossible situations, with bills mounting up whilst they care for a sick child. Essential Thyme are proud to be a supporter of The Charlie and Carter Foundation

Why Organ Donation Matters

Organ donation is not an easy topic. It is deeply emotional. It touches on fear, love, hope and grief all at once.

But it is also one of the most powerful gifts a person can give.

One decision. One conversation. One moment of clarity.

And potentially:

Up to 8 lives saved

Dozens more lives improved

Families given hope

Parents given time

None of us want to imagine being the family waiting for a transplant.

And none of us want to imagine being the family asked to donate.

But having the conversation today could remove uncertainty tomorrow.

If you feel able, consider:

Registering on the Organ Donor Register

Speaking to your loved ones about your wishes

Encouraging open, compassionate conversation

Supporting charities like The Charlie and Carter Foundation

Because behind every statistic is a family like Chris and Sarah’s.

And behind every registration is the possibility of life.

Life is precious. Conversations matter. And sometimes, love looks like making a decision that could save someone else’s child.

A diagnosis of thyroid cancer can be life-changing, not only physically but emotionally and mentally as well. Even when outcomes are positive, the journey through diagnosis, treatment and recovery can place enormous strain on the body and nervous system. For many people, finding safe, compassionate ways to support their wellbeing becomes an important part of healing. This is where oncology massage thyroid cancer support can play a gentle and meaningful role.

Oncology massage is not about treating cancer itself. Instead, it is a carefully adapted form of massage designed to support people living with cancer, those undergoing treatment, and those in recovery. When working with thyroid cancer specifically, massage must always be approached with knowledge, sensitivity and respect for individual medical history.

Understanding Thyroid Cancer and Its Impact

Thyroid cancer affects the thyroid gland, a small but powerful gland located in the neck that plays a vital role in hormone regulation, metabolism, energy levels and temperature control. Treatments may include surgery, radioactive iodine therapy, hormone replacement medication, and ongoing monitoring.

While thyroid cancer often has a positive prognosis, the physical and emotional effects can linger long after treatment ends. People may experience fatigue, muscle tension, changes in mood, anxiety, sleep disruption, or a feeling of being disconnected from their body. Scarring, stiffness in the neck and shoulders, and sensitivity around the throat area are also common.

Living with these changes can be challenging, which is why many people explore supportive therapies alongside medical care.

What Is Oncology Massage?

Oncology massage is a specialised approach to massage therapy that has been adapted to meet the unique needs of people affected by cancer. It considers diagnosis, treatment stage, side effects, medications and emotional wellbeing.

In the context of oncology massage thyroid cancer, this means:

Avoiding pressure in vulnerable areas such as the neck and surgical sites

Adapting positioning for comfort and safety

Using slower, gentler techniques

Being mindful of fatigue, sensitivity and emotional responses

Working within the client’s current medical guidance

Oncology massage is always client-led. Sessions are tailored to how someone feels on the day, recognising that needs may change from week to week.

How Oncology Massage Can Support People with Thyroid Cancer

While oncology massage does not treat thyroid cancer, it can offer valuable support in several ways.

Supporting the Nervous System

Cancer diagnosis and treatment can leave the nervous system in a constant state of alert. Gentle massage techniques can help encourage relaxation, allowing the body to shift out of “fight or flight” mode and into rest and recovery.

Easing Muscle Tension

After thyroid surgery or long periods of stress, many people experience tension in the shoulders, upper back and jaw. Oncology massage can help ease this discomfort without placing strain on sensitive areas.

Reducing Stress and Anxiety

Living with cancer can bring fear, uncertainty and emotional exhaustion. A calm, supportive massage environment can provide a sense of safety, grounding and emotional relief.

Improving Sleep and Rest

Fatigue is common both during and after cancer treatment. Massage may help support better sleep by encouraging relaxation and reducing physical discomfort.

Reconnecting with the Body

Some people feel disconnected from their body following cancer treatment. Oncology massage offers respectful, consent-led touch that can help rebuild trust and awareness at a pace that feels safe.

Important Considerations for Thyroid Cancer Clients

Massage therapy for people affected by thyroid cancer must always be approached carefully. A qualified oncology massage therapist will take a detailed health history and ask about:

Type and stage of thyroid cancer

Current or past treatments

Medications, including hormone replacement therapy

Surgical history and healing progress

Any ongoing symptoms such as fatigue, pain or sensitivity

Areas around the neck, throat and lymph nodes are treated with extreme caution, and in some cases avoided entirely. Massage pressure is always adjusted, and sessions may focus on areas such as the back, arms, legs or hands instead.

Communication is key. Clients are encouraged to share how they feel during and after sessions so therapy can be adapted accordingly.

The Role of Essential Oils in Oncology Massage

Essential oils are sometimes used alongside oncology massage, but only when appropriate and with careful consideration. In the context of oncology massage thyroid cancer, essential oils are chosen for their calming properties rather than any therapeutic claims.

Oils such as lavender, frankincense or chamomile may be used in very low dilutions to support relaxation and emotional wellbeing. However, essential oils are always optional, and many oncology massage sessions are carried out without them.

A trained therapist will always check for sensitivities, allergies or contraindications before use.

A Trauma-Informed and Inclusive Approach

Oncology massage is about more than physical technique. It is a trauma-informed practice that recognises the emotional impact of cancer. Sessions are paced slowly, consent is ongoing, and clients are always in control of their experience.

Inclusive practice is essential. Everyone’s cancer journey is different, and language, touch and boundaries must reflect that individuality. Oncology massage welcomes people of all identities, backgrounds and experiences, creating a space where clients feel seen, respected and supported.

Is Oncology Massage Right for You?

Oncology massage may be suitable if you are:

Living with thyroid cancer

Undergoing treatment

In remission or recovery

Managing long-term side effects

Seeking gentle, supportive care alongside medical treatment

It is always recommended to speak with your healthcare provider if you are unsure whether massage is appropriate for you at a particular stage.

Supporting Wellbeing at Essential Thyme

At Essential Thyme, massage therapy is approached with care, professionalism and compassion. Oncology massage is delivered with a deep respect for individual health journeys, including those affected by thyroid cancer.

If you are exploring supportive therapies and would like to learn more about oncology massage thyroid cancer support, you can contact us.

Where to Begin with Your Business Plan

When writing a business plan for a massage therapy business, it helps to begin with the foundations. These early reflections guide your decisions later on.

Your vision

Ask yourself what kind of therapist you want to be.

Do you want to focus on relaxation and stress relief?

Would you like to support people with muscle tension?

Or do you feel drawn to work with specific groups, such as expectant parents or people needing emotional support?

Your vision helps shape your business identity and the atmosphere you want to create for your clients.

Your training

In the United Kingdom, you must complete an accredited Level 3 qualification in massage therapy, or an equivalent qualification, to practise professionally, obtain insurance and be recognised by professional bodies.

At Essential Thyme, every course is accredited and insurable. This means that once you complete your training and receive your certificate, you are ready to begin working safely and professionally.

Training Available (New 2026 Pricing from 1 January 2026)

Foundation Courses:

Indian Head Massage – £219 (Group) / £294 (Solo)
Thai Hand and Foot Massage – £219 (Group) / £294 (Solo)

Level 3 Massage Courses:

Swedish Massage – £365 (Group) / £419 (Solo)

Advanced Courses
(These require a Level 3 qualification or equivalent before joining.)
Cupping Therapy – £269 (Group) / £344 (Solo)
Pregnancy Massage – £269 (Group) / £344 (Solo)
Deep Tissue Massage – £269 (Group) / £344 (Solo)

Essential Oils Level 1 and Level 2:
In-person – £670
Home study – £650

Your business plan can also include therapies you hope to add in the future, giving you space to grow and develop your skills over time.

What to Include in Your Massage Therapy Business Plan

1. Your services

List the therapies you intend to offer and explain why you have chosen them. This helps define your strengths and shows the direction you want your business to take.

For example, Swedish Massage may form your foundation, while Indian Head Massage or Thai Hand and Foot Massage offer shorter sessions that appeal to busy clients. Aromatherapy blends beautifully with relaxation-based treatments, and advanced therapies such as Pregnancy Massage or Deep Tissue Massage can help you support a wider range of clients.

2. Your ideal clients

Understanding who you want to work with is essential when writing a business plan for a massage therapy business. It shapes your marketing, the type of space you create and even how you communicate.

Consider whether you want to support:

people experiencing stress

individuals with ongoing muscle tension

office workers who sit for long periods

people seeking emotional wellbeing support

older adults

expectant parents

The clearer your audience, the easier it is to attract the right clients.

3. Your location and setup

Where you deliver your therapies influences both your costs and your working style. You may choose to:

set up a peaceful space in your home

rent a therapy room in a wellbeing centre

work in an established clinic

offer mobile appointments in clients’ homes

Think about what feels realistic, comfortable and aligned with your lifestyle.

Financial Outlay: What You Will Need to Begin

The start-up costs for a massage therapy business are relatively low, especially compared to many other professions. Most of what you invest in becomes part of your long-term business.

Training and education

Prices range from £219 to £670 depending on the course.

Equipment

Massage couch: £150–£350
Towels, blankets and bolsters: £40–£100
Massage oils, waxes and essential oils: £50–£100
Cleaning and laundry supplies: £20–£40 per month

Insurance

Professional insurance: £50–£80 per year.

Website and hosting

A website helps clients find you, understand what you offer and book an appointment.

Typical costs include:
Domain name: £10–£20 per year
Website hosting: £75–£200 per year
Building your own website: £5–£20 per month
Professional design: £900–£1,500

Most therapists begin with a simple layout: a home page, an “about me” page, a services page, a booking link and a contact form.

Room rental

Prices vary depending on location, but usually fall between £10 and £20 per hour, or £150–£350 per month.

Marketing: How to Attract Your First Clients

Marketing does not have to be complicated or expensive. Many new therapists begin by using simple, accessible tools, such as:

social media pages

posts in local community groups

a few printed flyers

word-of-mouth referrals from friends and family

As your business grows, you may decide to:

take short courses on marketing

improve your website

invest in paid advertising

hire a professional for support

However, in the early stages, your own voice and authenticity are your best marketing tools. Sharing your training journey, your values and your passion for wellbeing helps clients feel connected to you.

How Quickly Can You Turn a Profit?

Many new massage therapists begin earning profit within the first few months of working, especially if they already have a small network or are active on social media. Once your training and equipment are paid for, your main ongoing costs are room hire and supplies.

With consistent marketing and good client care, you may see regular bookings within one to three months, and a steady client base within six to twelve months.

Your business plan should outline:

how much you intend to charge

how many clients you would like to see each week

your monthly expenses

when you expect to break even

Seeing these figures written down can help you feel more confident and prepared.

Your Future Starts with a Plan

Writing a business plan for a massage therapy business is a powerful first step. It gives clarity, confidence and direction as you begin shaping a career that supports both your wellbeing and that of your clients.

At Essential Thyme, I am proud to support students from their very first class all the way to establishing their own successful therapy businesses.
Stress is something every one of us experiences, yet it affects each person differently. For some, stress shows up as a busy mind, poor sleep, or physical tension. For others, it can become deeply overwhelming, pulling the body into a state of constant alertness. While we’re not diving into clinical conditions such as PTSD in detail, it’s important to recognise that extreme or prolonged stress can mimic certain heightened responses seen in trauma-related experiences. The good news is that understanding stress and its triggers can help you take meaningful steps towards managing your wellbeing, and natural therapies like massage and essential oils can play a powerful supportive role.

What Is Stress and Why Do Triggers Matter?

Stress is the body’s natural reaction to pressure, challenge, or perceived danger. When something triggers stress, the body activates the “fight-or-flight” response, releasing hormones like cortisol and adrenaline. These are helpful in short bursts but draining and destabilising when activated too frequently.

Triggers vary from person to person. What overwhelms one individual may barely register for another, and this is completely normal. Understanding stress and its triggers allows you to recognise patterns that influence your mental, emotional, and physical wellbeing.

Some triggers are obvious, workload, family pressures, life changes, but others can be subtle. Sounds, smells, certain environments, or even unexpected reminders of past difficult experiences can cause the body to react strongly, even if you can’t immediately pinpoint why.

Common Triggers of Stress

Although everyone’s stress experience is unique, several triggers appear frequently in everyday life:

Work-Related Pressure
Deadlines, long hours, or unclear expectations can place the body in a long-term state of alertness. Over time, this can lead to burnout, fatigue, and irritability.

Emotional Strain
Relationship issues, loss, conflict, or unresolved worries often activate deeper layers of the stress response. These emotional triggers can be cumulative, building quietly until the body feels overwhelmed.

Environmental Triggers
Crowded spaces, loud noises, bright lights, certain social settings, or even weather changes can influence the nervous system. For people with past traumatic experiences, these triggers may feel more intense and harder to predict.

Physical Overload
Illness, poor sleep, and chronic pain can make the body less resilient, meaning smaller triggers feel larger than they normally would. The body cannot separate emotional and physical stress, both deplete your internal resources.

Internal Expectations
Perfectionism, fear of letting others down, or constantly striving to do more can create stress cycles that feel impossible to break. Internal triggers are some of the hardest to recognise because they’re rooted in thought patterns rather than external events.

The Link Between Stress and the Body

When discussing stress and its triggers, it’s important to remember that the body is always listening. Stress doesn’t stay in the mind, it shows up physically. You may notice:

Tight shoulders and neck tension

Headaches or migraines

Digestive discomfort

Shallow breathing

Fatigue despite rest

Increased sensitivity to noise or touch

These physical responses are completely natural. They simply indicate that your nervous system is working harder than usual.

While this is different from conditions such as PTSD, there is an overlap in how the body reacts to unexpected triggers. Both involve heightened sensitivity and a strong physical response to perceived stress. Acknowledging this helps you better understand why stress may feel so intense at times and why self-care is essential.

How Massage Therapy Helps the Stress Response

Massage is more than a relaxing treat; it directly influences the body’s physiological stress processes. At Essential Thyme in Jesmond, our therapies are designed to soothe the nervous system and encourage the body back into balance. Massage can:

Reduce cortisol levels

Boost serotonin and dopamine

Improve circulation

Loosen tense muscles

Encourage deeper breathing

Promote a sense of grounding and safety

For those dealing with sustained stress or unpredictable triggers, massage provides structured, calm, therapeutic touch, which acts as a powerful signal to the brain that it is safe to relax.

Clients often report that regular therapies help them feel more stable, more aware of their stress patterns, and more able to recognise triggers when they appear. It’s a gentle yet effective way to reset the nervous system.

The Role of Essential Oils in Supporting Stress Relief

Essential oils have been used for centuries to support emotional wellbeing, and they work beautifully alongside massage therapy. At Essential Thyme, we incorporate high-quality oils chosen for their calming, grounding, or uplifting properties.

Some oils particularly helpful for managing stress and its triggers include:

Lavender – Calming, balancing, and ideal for soothing heightened emotions.

Bergamot – Uplifting yet gentle, perfect for emotional tension.

Frankincense – Grounding and ideal for quieting a busy mind.

Chamomile – Relaxing for both the mind and the body.

Clary Sage – Helpful for hormonal stress and emotional overwhelm.

Essential oils work through both smell and skin absorption, engaging the limbic system, the part of the brain that stores emotions and controls the stress response. This makes aromatherapy a natural complement for anyone wanting to manage their triggers more calmly and consistently.

Creating Your Own Stress Support Rituals

Managing stress and its triggers is an ongoing journey, not a quick fix. Small, consistent habits make the biggest difference. You might try:

Gentle stretching or breathwork

A calming essential oil diffuser

Regular massage therapy appointments

Mindfulness or grounding techniques

Setting boundaries around your time and energy

Journaling to identify stress patterns

These practices help your nervous system unwind and provide tools to cope more effectively when triggers arise.

Supporting Your Wellbeing with Essential Thyme

At Essential Thyme, we understand how stress affects the whole person, body, mind, and emotions. We provide a safe, welcoming space where you can relax, recharge, and reconnect with yourself.
