LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY®

What Is LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY®?

At Essential Thyme, we bring teams together through the power of LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® (LSP)—a dynamic and proven method designed to unlock innovation, improve communication, and drive performance within your business.

LSP is more than just an activity; it’s a framework for transforming how your team collaborates and communicates. By engaging in the creative process of building models, participants are encouraged to think with their hands, sparking new perspectives and unlocking ideas that might otherwise remain untapped.

What sets LSP apart is its inclusive and democratic approach. Every participant builds, every participant shares. This ensures everyone has equal airtime and fosters a culture where all voices are heard. In this process, LSP acts like a “3D print” of your thoughts, helping you reflect on your own ideas while also allowing others to gain insights from them.

LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® Etiquette: What to Expect

Facilitator-Guided Process

Our trained facilitators set the question or challenge, manage timelines, and guide your team through the process for maximum engagement. These tasks and processes are tailored to the challenges your team is facing to achieve maximum results from our LSP session!

Your Model, your Answer

Your Lego model represents your response to the challenge—there are no wrong answers, just your unique perspective. Our trained facilitators guide your team through the task, which your team will answer by building their own LEGO model unique to their perspective.

Hands-On Thinking

The Lego Serious Play methodology encourages participants to “think with their hands” to unlock creativity and deeper problem-solving abilities. By using your hands to build, you tap into parts of the brain that traditional methods often overlook, enabling new ideas to surface.

Collaborative Storytelling

Storytelling is at the heart of the Lego Serious Play process. Once you’ve built your model, you’ll explain the meaning behind it. Listening is equally important—observe the details in others’ models and listen attentively to their stories and their solution to the problem.

  • “LEGO® is a Toy – This Won’t Work for Serious Business Issues”
It’s natural to feel skeptical, but companies like Google and NASA rely on LEGO® Serious Play® (LSP) to tackle their most complex challenges. The bricks are simply a tool for unlocking creativity, helping participants think beyond traditional boundaries and solve problems with fresh perspectives.
  • “I Can’t Picture What a Session Looks Like”
Many people find it hard to visualise without experiencing it. LSP sessions involve participants building models to represent their ideas and using these models to communicate abstract concepts in a tangible way. Examples and visuals from past sessions can help demonstrate its power and effectiveness.
  • “How Does Building Models Lead to Deeper Communication?”
It’s common to fear the unknown, especially when the tool is unfamiliar. LSP creates a safe space for expressing complex ideas that are hard to articulate, such as team values or organisational goals. By using models, participants can explore these concepts in ways words alone cannot. Emphasising how top brands trust this method often reassures decision-makers.
  • “Our Team Isn’t Creative Enough for This”
Creativity isn’t a prerequisite for LSP. The method is designed for everyone, from the least to the most creative thinkers, and often those who doubt their creativity end up contributing the most. LSP encourages different ways of thinking without requiring artistic skills, making it accessible and effective for all teams.

Poor Engagement During Learning Programs

Many organisations struggle with disengagement during workshops or training sessions. Employees often feel these sessions are unproductive, disconnected from their work, or overly passive.

LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® (LSP) changes this dynamic by transforming learning into an active and immersive experience. Instead of passively listening, participants engage their hands and minds to build models that represent their ideas. This hands-on approach ensures that everyone stays invested, energised, and connected to the session’s goals.

With LSP, your team benefits from:

  • Active participation: Every individual builds, shares, and collaborates.
  • Increased engagement: The creative process keeps participants focused and motivated.
  • Practical relevance: Sessions feel meaningful, with insights directly tied to real-world challenges.

If your team workshops or training sessions have felt stagnant, LSP offers an interactive and impactful way to re-engage your employees and maximise the value of your learning programs.

Lack of Innovation and Fresh Ideas

Many organisations find their teams stuck in the same thought patterns, struggling to generate fresh, innovative ideas. Traditional brainstorming methods often fall short in breaking these creative blocks.

LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® (LSP) offers a hands-on approach to reignite creativity and foster innovative thinking. By engaging both the hands and the mind, participants step away from conventional thinking and tap into new perspectives. The tactile process of building with LEGO® bricks activates different parts of the brain, enabling teams to approach challenges in novel ways.

With LSP, your team gains:

  • A break from routine thinking: Fresh ideas emerge through creative, hands-on problem-solving.
  • Increased innovation: The process helps unlock insights that wouldn’t surface in traditional meetings.
  • Engaged participation: Teams are actively involved, making the experience both fun and productive.

If your team feels stuck in a creative rut, LSP provides the tools to spark fresh ideas and reimagine your approach to challenges—one brick at a time.

Low Motivation and Flat Team Energy

When team energy is low, meetings feel lifeless, and morale drops, it can lead to disengagement and even higher staff turnover. Addressing this requires a method that re-energises the team and fosters a renewed sense of purpose.

LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® (LSP) is designed to breathe life back into teams. By engaging participants in a hands-on, creative process, LSP moves individuals out of passive roles and into active collaboration. Our Brickworks Testimonials!

Sandra from Brickworks was fantastic! We took part in a session using LEGO and could immediately see the benefits for corporate clients. It was a brilliant way to create a relaxed and engaging environment while also highlighting the key aspects of our roles. The session helped build stronger team rapport in a fun and interactive way. Thanks, Sandra!

– Rachel , Social+

I took part in a Lego Workshop with Sandra and found it a really interesting session. I wasn’t sure what to expect but I really enjoyed it. I learnt a lot about myself and how I work and what processes need to be in place for me to produce my best work. It was interesting to see what everyone else in the session came up with as well and see the different personalities of the team come to light. Definitely made me think!
