Personal Space Day – 30th November

Mark your calendars—tomorrow30th November is Personal Space Day, a light hearted but meaningful reminder that everyone needs a little breathing room now and then! Whether it’s crowded train seats or a rare quiet moment, today is all about celebrating the simple power of respecting personal boundaries.

What is Personal Space?

Think of personal space as an invisible bubble we all carry around. For some, it’s big and wide, for others, it’s snug and cosy. It’s not just about physical distance. It also covers emotional and mental space. Ever wanted five minutes to yourself after a long day? Or felt awkward when someone stood just a bit too close in line? That’s your personal space talking!

Why It’s a Big Deal
Giving people space shows that we see and respect them. When someone feels their boundaries are acknowledged, it builds trust, comfort, and confidence in any setting—whether at home, work, or out in public.
On the flip side, crowding someone—physically or emotionally—may make them feel overwhelmed or stressed. Personal Space Day is a fun way to remember that sometimes the kindest thing you can do is take a step back.

How to Celebrate (Without Getting in Anyone’s Face)
You don’t need balloons or party hats to celebrate this day—just a little thoughtfulness goes a long way. Here are a few easy ways to join in:

Give people room – Whether you’re in line, on a bus, or in a meeting, be mindful of how close you are.

Ask before you hug – Not everyone’s a hugger, and that’s okay!

Respect quiet time – If someone’s taking a break or needs a moment, let them have it.

Speak up (nicely) – If you need space yourself, it’s perfectly fine to say so.

Lead by example – Set your own healthy boundaries and show others how it’s done with kindness and confidence.

The Bigger Picture
At its heart, Personal Space Day isn’t just about distance—it’s about respect, empathy, and tuning in to each other’s needs. It encourages a world where people feel safe, heard, and understood.

So, this 30th November, take a moment to make a little space. Smile from across the room, check in with a friend who might need quiet time, or simply enjoy your own company. After all, sometimes the best way to connect is by giving each other room to breathe.

A Spotlight On… Floaters and flashes in the eyes

Dots and lines (floaters) or flashes of light in your vision are common. They’re not usually serious.

Symptoms of floaters and flashes

Floaters in your vision could look like:

  • small dark dots
  • squiggly lines
  • rings
  • cobwebs

Flashes look like sudden flashes of light.

They’re usually harmless and not a sign of anything serious, especially if:

  • you’ve had them for a long time
  • they’re not getting worse
  • your vision is not affected

Flashes may eventually stop, and floaters often become less noticeable as you get used to them.

Ask for an urgent opticians’ appointment or get help from NHS 111 if:

you suddenly get floaters or flashes in your vision

  • the number of floaters or flashes suddenly increases
  • you have a dark “curtain” or shadow moving across your vision
  • you also have blurred vision
  • you also have eye pain
  • floaters start after eye surgery or an eye injury

These could be signs of a serious problem with the back of your eye, which could permanently affect your vision if it’s not treated quickly.

Call 111 or get help from 111 online.

Causes of floaters and flashes

Lots of people, particularly older people, get floaters and flashes.

They’re usually caused by a harmless process called posterior vitreous detachment (PVD), where the gel inside your eye’s changes.

Sometimes they may be caused by retinal detachment. This is serious and could lead to permanent vision loss if not treated. Floaters and flashes may also happen for no obvious reason.
