Less Mess, Less Stress: The Power of a Tidy Space

Clutter can pile up in both our surroundings and our minds, often leading to stress and distraction. The good news? Clearing it away doesn’t have to be overwhelming. With a few simple strategies, you could create a calmer, more organised space in no time.

Some Simple Strategies to try.

Start Small and Focused
Set a timer for five minutes and tackle one specific area. It could be a desk corner, a kitchen counter, or even a drawer. You’ll be surprised at how much difference a short burst of effort can make.

Use the Four Box Method
Prepare four boxes and label them: Keep, Donate, Bin, Relocate. Sort items into each as you go. This method helps you make clear decisions and keeps the process straightforward.

Let Go of “Just in Case” Items
If you haven’t used something in the past year, it’s probably not essential. Be honest about whether the item truly serves a purpose.

Declutter Digitally
Clutter isn’t only physical. Take a few minutes to tidy up your inbox, remove apps you no longer use, and organise your desktop.

Celebrate Progress
Decluttering is an ongoing habit, not a one-time event. Acknowledge each step forward and appreciate the difference it makes.

By following these small but powerful actions, you could maintain a more organised and peaceful environment without feeling weighed down. A little consistency each day adds up. So set a timer, grab a box, and take the first step today!

A Spotlight On… Common Cold

Often a cold is treatable without seeing a GP. You should begin to feel better in about 1 to 2 weeks.

Symptoms of a Common Cold?

Cold symptoms come on gradually over 2 to 3 days.

The main symptoms include:

  • a blocked or runny nose / sneezing
  • a sore throat / hoarse voice
  • a cough
  • feeling tired and unwell

You may also have:

  • a high temperature
  • aching muscles
  • a loss of taste and smell
  • a feeling of pressure in your ears and face

Treating a cold yourself

Do:

  • get plenty of rest
  • drink lots of fluid, such as water, to avoid dehydration
  • eat healthy food (it’s common for small children to lose their appetite for a few days)
  • gargle salt water to soothe a sore throat (not suitable for children)
  • drink a hot lemon and honey drink to soothe a sore throat

Don’t:

  • do not let children breathe in steam from a bowl of hot water because of the risk of scalding
  • do not give aspirin to children under the age of 16
  • do not smoke as it can make your symptoms worse

If you have a high temperature or do not feel well enough to do your normal activities, try to stay at home and avoid contact with other people until you feel better.

A pharmacist may help with cold medicines

A pharmacist will advise you on the best medicine, such as:

Do not use other cough and cold medicines if you’re also taking paracetamol and ibuprofen tablets as you may take more medicine than you should.

See a GP if:

  • you have a high temperature for more than 3 days / your temperature is very high, or you feel hot and shivery
  • you feel short of breath or have chest pain
  • your cold symptoms do not get better after 10 days
  • you have a cough for more than 3 weeks

Essential oils like Eucalyptus and Tea Tree are not a cure for colds, but they may offer some relief. Their soothing and invigorating properties could help relieve congestion during a cold.
